Blue Ghost Firefly
Phausis reticulata

Steady-State Luminescence
Unlike the "Big Dipper" fireflies that flash on and off, the male Blue Ghost can keep its light on for up to a minute or more at a time. This creates long, luminous trails as they fly slowly through the understory.
The Blue-Green Illusion
Though called "Blue Ghosts," their light is scientifically closer to a very pale green. However, due to the Purkinje effect (how human eyes perceive color in low light), the light appears as a ghostly, electric blue to our rods and cones.
Ancient Forest Indicators
Blue Ghosts are highly sensitive to habitat disturbance. They are only found in undisturbed, moist leaf litter of mature forests. Their presence is a sign of a healthy, ancient ecosystem.
